Michael Pfister heads ZEIT Online’s picture editing team in Berlin. His career began as a reporter for the Swiss radio DRS and print media. He later initiated and produced multimedia projects, panel discussions, festivals and conferences and worked in cultural management for the British Council, Swiss Arts Council and Swiss Music Export at home and abroad. At the Swiss media training center MAZ in Lucerne he studied photo editing and went to Ringier Verlag as photo editor, then to Germany to the photo and reportage agency laif in Cologne. Here he worked with Pulitzer Prize winners and World Press Photo winners as well as reporting agencies around the world. As a photo editor at Bild am Sonntag, he commissioned photographers and reporters all over the world for four years. As an expert in the field of photo and reportage journalism, he trained photographers and young journalists at workshops in Cairo, Egypt and Lucerne / Switzerland. As the initiator and moderator of roundtables, including at the international literature festival in Berlin, he promotes a more nuanced discussion about photojournalism and human rights in conflict situations. For years he has been a member of the Federal Press Conference, Reporters Without Borders and PEN (Poets, Essayists, Novelists).
