Research

Dr. Dimitri Coelho Mollo

I am a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Excellence Cluster Science of Intelligence, as well as at the Berlin School of Mind and Brain, and at the Institute for Philosophy, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. My main areas of research are Philosophy of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, as well as Philosophy of Science more generally. I am also interested in the ethics of current and future use of AI systems, and in the Philosophy of Climate Science.

My main focus is on basic notions in the cognitive sciences, such as representation, computation, and intelligence. Questions that I have been tackling include:

– What are the best theories of representation and computation for the study of cognition and intelligence?
– What roles do imagination, analogy and abstraction play in our models of animal and artificial intelligence?
– What internal and external capacities and mechanisms are required for intelligent behavior?
– How should we characterize intelligent behavior to start with?

I make use of tools and results from philosophy and science in trying to answer these and related questions.
